A First Attempt at Astrophotography

Subject: Jupiter and one Galilean moon
Telescope: Orion XT8i
Camera: Canon Rebel T1i
Technique: ~1000 frames stacked with Registax and post-processed with Photoshop.

This was my first attempt at astrophotography. I was able to mitigate problems with atmospheric seeing by using my camera to take video and stacking the resulting frames. This was the result of about 1000 frames stacked and processed. I accidentally set my white balance to tungsten when taking the video so I had to play with the curves quite a bit in order to bring the color back out of the bands.

I was lucky enough to not only catch a glimpse of the great red spot, but also a moon. This tends to be very difficult in planetary astrophotography due to the brightness of planets. Hopefully my success here is a sign of what’s to come!
